Datch u14s so close

Datch u14s v Royston - 25/09/2016 – Lost 26-24

As the Royston side had such a large squad we played 4 quarters against the 2 sides that Royston had effectively brought (they had 24 players to our 12 !).

The Datch players moved the ball well from the start and were able to compete well at the breakdown against the larger opposition.

The scrum was outstanding with Oscar and Elliot all over the park. Paddy had a high tackle count and Josh was strong in the ruck , at last hitting the ruck as though it was Kev on the pad ! Tom also played well at hooker winning a number of balls against the head.

The backline moved the ball well all game with Nick and Brandon linking well to release attack after attack. Ollie and Ben also had strong games with strong tackling and both capped fine performances with well taken tries (with Ollie also adding 2 conversions).

The back three of Rhys ,Harry and Finn showed real pace and Finn must have covered every blade of grass on the pitch. Rhys went over for 2 well taken tries showing his true pace to cross the line twice.

There was strong tackling all day , but 2 tackles stood out , firstly Rhys taking down the much larger Royston centre who looked set for a certain try and then Josh who tracked back with real determination to tackle the same player just short of the tryline.

All in all a very encouraging display with some great passages of play from both teams and it was quite a large crowd as well as there were so many Royston players !

Note to Datch Mums : Remember to cheer at the point when a try was scored - there was a such delayed reaction to Rhys' Try which led to them cheering the try at the point we missed the conversion , which was a slightly odd thing to cheer !!

Summary

Datch should take heart from a strong performance where they played some good rugby against their much larger opponents. Still a bit to work on but a good day at the office.
