We headed down to OA’s ground with a squad of just 14, and even though OA’s A/B’s were away, we knew it would still be a tough morning even against their C’s which we met only last week in the Letchworth Festival, who beat us 4-1.
However, this time we put up a much stronger showing against them, with some fine rucking on show, and even some lovely flowing rugby with pass after pass going out to the line. Defensively we were better too, with some superb tackles coming in time and time again from the likes of Isaac, William Field, Spike, William Bacon and Joshua Staddon. Defensive kicking once again came from Spencer “the boot” Bayford to clear our lines, and William Bacon was always in the thick of things driving over the tackled player to protect our ball and also to win us several turnover balls, something which deservedly won him Player of the Week.
At half time we were just 3-2 down, with tries from William Field and Isaac, one of which came from a great charge down of an attempted OA’s clearance kick by William Goff. The second half saw us come out equal with OA’s with 2 tries apiece, ours coming from William Field and William Bacon. Final score then after a 30 minute game was 5-4 (25-20) to the OA’s.
After a break, it was decided that we’d play one more shortened game. Unfortunately William Goff had to leave which meant we were down to 13 boys, but that only proved unlucky for the OA’s, as we came out on top this time 2-1 (10-5) after two superb tries from William Field and Isaac to take the win.
