Squad for the matches: William Field, William Goff, Isaac Byrne, Thomas Paine, Matthew Rates, Jonathan Germanos, Spencer Bayford, Joshua Staddon, Cameron Smith, Aidan Pennels, Spike Howard, Thomas Beechey, Oliver Dean
3 games were played during the morning, and overall Datchworth proved just too strong for Welwyn taking two wins and a draw, keeping a clean sheet of no losses against a strong opposition.
In the first game, strong defensive play from both teams meant it was very hard for anyone to cross the line. Some good link play by Datchworth and straight running threatened Welwyn’s defensive line on several occasions, but the sole try of the match was provided by Jonathan Germanos utilising his size and strength to break through the defence. Datchworth took the win 5-0.
For the second game, Welwyn insisted on using their own referee, but it made no difference to the result as Datchworth again proved themselves way too strong for Welwyn, winning 25-0. Datch were able to use a combination of the speed and strength of the squad with tries coming from Matthew Rates, William Field, Isaac Byrne, Thomas Paine & Joshua Staddon. Yet again a strong defensive performance from everyone meant Welwyn were held back from scoring at all. A particular mention is deserved for Cameron Smith who put in his best game of the season making many fine chop tackles.
In the final game, still using a Welwyn referee, Welwyn were ahead 10-0 at half time, but Datchworth came back strongly in the second half with a fine jinking try from Spencer Bayford and another break through try from Isaac Byrne ensuring we took the draw and avoided an “L” on the scoresheet.
Datchworth coaches were hugely proud of the way both the Datchworth and Welwyn children represented their clubs on the day, and put everything into their games within the true spirit of rugby.
