On Tuesday night newly promoted Datchworth continued their preparation for the upcoming season in London NW2 by visiting Hitchin for a pre-season friendly.
Both clubs came together to make the most of the opportunity by having a combined warm-up then playing a well-matched 3-period game. Datchworth ran in 5 tries on the night to Hitchin’s 3 but the evening was designed for all players to get the first run out and it did just that.
In the first period, the more established players went head to head and the feature of the play was a high energy level and Datchworth enjoyed the majority of the play and field position, the Datchworth side also taking the opportunity to give a number of the u18 players a run. The second-period mixed teams went up against each other with high intensity and this time it was Hitchin who enjoyed the balance of play with Datchworth showing some determined defense. Finally, the third period ended up with again the two more established sets of players going at it and once more Datchworth looked the stronger.
Hitchin were great hosts on the night, under lights, on a great surface and both clubs will have taken a good step towards the season.
Training will be on Tuesday and Thursday next week, with the next pre-season games on Saturday 7th September for both a First and Second team, against Stevenage and Chingford respectively.
