Datchworth finish first half of season with BP win against St Albans

On what felt like the warmest ever December day, Datchworth won out 32-21 winners against St Albans. Datchworth started quickly, a fantastic delayed pass from Sam Brunton at fly half put wing James Watt in space and he easily beat both defender and full back, Captain & scrum half Tom Wood couldn’t convert. Datchworth soon scored their second of the game, a fine 30 metre break from Wing James Watt him under the posts – this time Wood converted. A dogged St Albans weren’t to be deterred though and hit back just before the half, a quickly taken penalty caught Datchworth off guard and they were in under the posts. Wood managed to nick a penalty before half time to make it 15-7.

Datchworth scored the pivotal first try of the second half, not before the St Albans hooker was sin binned for an illegal tackle. Barraging forward pick and go’s saw dynamic prop Nick Gudgin scuttle over for the third. Datchworth then secured the bonus point try. Outstanding running from substitute centre Richard Mills created loads of space after a quickly taken penalty, Wing James Watt was on the end of the break to secure his hatrick and eighth try of the season. St Albans then added a second to their credit, another quickly taken penalty catching Datchworth off guard. The St Albans 6 was then sin binned for kicking James Watt in the head. Datchworth then scored their fifth, Wing Joe Richardson kicked over the St Albans defence, impressively leapt to get on the end of it, offloaded to Winters and he was in under the posts. Wood converted this one. With the last play of the game St Albans got a consolation though it wasn’t to be and Datchworth celebrated 10 points from two games. A following Christmas social ensued, which went into the early hours.

Datchworth’s next game is a 2pm home kick off on the 9th January to Old Actonians.
