Tries from Sam McBroom & Henry Mountain combined with a flawless kicking display from Scrum Half Tom Wood saw Datchworth complete a second victory of the season over Stevenage. With injuries mounting up, Datchworth fielded a much changed team though this didn’t stop them starting strongly. Playing into the wind, they bombarded the Stevenage defence, though the hosts defended resolutely and didn’t let Datchworth through. Everytime the men in green came close, Stevenage would force a turnover or Datchworth would cough the ball up. It wasn’t until the 35th minute that the deadlock was broken. Datchworth broke on the right wing with Alex Nolan, the ball was recycled quickly and found its way to prop McBroom. From 20 metres out, he sidestepped one Stevenage player before walking over opposite man Reece Crucifix to get the score. Wood converted & Datchworth went in 7-0 up.
Playing with the wind this half, Datchworth couldn’t have got off to a worse start. Pressing well in the scrum, the ball popped out of the back, the Stevenage Scrum Half grabbed it and ran in unopposed near the posts, though unfortunately the try was not converted. Datchworth then took the game to Stevenage again and soon won a penalty. Stevenage were judged to have been holding the ball in at the breakdown and the relentless Wood converted the kick with ease. Soon after Datchworth scored their second try. A fine backs move saw the ball work its way to Henry Mountain, who ran in under the posts to give Datchworth an unassailable lead. Wood converted then added another penalty to give the visitors a 15 point lead.
There was still time for Stevenage to score a consolation try, again from the scrum-half. Though it wasn’t to be and Datchworth ran out winners. This week there is no game though the following Saturday sees Datchworth host Grasshoppers with a 2pm kick off
