Datchworth made it two wins on the spin after running out victorious against Grasshoppers Saturday. The first half, not one for the spectators, saw only one bit of action in an otherwise lacklustre forty minutes that was dominated by the boot. Full back Joe Richardson who had a very impressive game got the score, evading four tackles to score under the posts. Scrum half Tom Wood added the extras, though unfortunately that was his only successful kick of the day.
The second half was much better to watch. You always felt the first try of the second half would be crucial to the outcome of the match and it was Datchworth that scored it. Having soaked up a ten minute period of pressure from the visitors, the seconds rows in particular imposing, Datchworth scored. Grasshoppers were actually in control of the ball in the midfield though wing Matt Blackwell spotted an interception, grabbed it and using his absolutely rapid pace sprinted fifty metres under the posts unchallenged. Following the second try, strong pressure from scrum time saw Datchworth move into the opposition five, the ball was then passed wide for centre Matt Winters to get the score. There was still time for Datchworth to get the fourth, no 8. Henry Mountain literally touched the ball down as the scrum had driven Grasshoppers over their own line.
A solid performance from Datchworth that was only marred by a nose injury to Luke Bennett, a cheap shot after he’d only been on the pitch 5 minutes. Unfortunately now his face is not quite so symmetrical. Saturday sees Datchworth go to Hackney, a win would see them leapfrog Hackney in to fourth place.
