Datchworth continued their emphatic start to the season with a tough fought win over newly promoted Kilburn Cosmos. Kilburn started powerfully though it was Datchworth that took the lead. Winger James Watt made a fantastic interception which saw him in under the posts – had he not made the interception it was likely that Kilburn would have taken the lead themselves. Fly-Half Richard Mills with the extras. Kilburn hit straight back, barraging through the Datchworth defence and were in under the posts, 7-7. 20 minutes of attritional rugby followed, with penalties exchanged by both fly-halves. Datchworth scored a second with five minutes of the half left. A break from Front-Row Sam McBroom gave Datchworth the impetus and Scrum-Half Tom Wood followed up in the corner. Try was converted to make the score 17-10. Datchworth though couldn’t hold on until half time, Kilburn with some impressive back play saw them sneak in and under the posts to go in 17-17 at the break.
The first score of the second half was always going to be crucial and it was Datchworth that got it. Inside Centre Alex Nolan pounced on a loose ball and ran 60 metres without challenge to dive under the posts. Mills soon after slotted an exquisite drop-goal and the Kilburn heads dropped. No 8. Stuart Young then scored the bonus point try and try of the day with a line through the visitor’s defence that Kiwi Julian Savea would have been proud of, the contest was all but over. There was still time for a last minute consolation from Kilburn though it wasn’t enough and Datchworth kept up their impressive unbeaten streak.
Saturday see’s Datchworth travel to OMT’s, determined to keep up the unbeaten streak.
