Torrential downpours did not diminish the turnout of supporters for Datchworth’s first league game of the season, hosting Verulamians at home.
Time spent in pre-season working on breakdowns did not pay off in the first half with the referee appearing to not be applying the new laws. The players conceded some early penalties through this but adapted well to not concede more through the match.
Datch did not get much time with the ball in hand and Verulamians’ defensive skills were not being put to the test enough. That said the forwards, especially Mark Holgate, made yards with ball in hand, punching up through the defensive line. With more possession and territory the style of play may have lead to Datchworth crossing the line.
Comfortably kicking a penalty from the halfway line early in the first half, Verulamians’ fly-half was immaculate from the boot clinically punishing all infringements by Datch.
Datchworth kept the opposition quiet for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Some sublime footwork from Tom Bennet from the back of a ruck left the Verulamians defence looking dumbfounded as he crossed for Datchworths only try of the day. Unfortunately, this was not converted and marked the last time Datch would get close to the line.
Considering the possession and territory enjoyed by the opposition, Datchworth’s defence held up well and it took two lapses of concentration for Veralaniums to actually break the line and get their tries. A final break-away try for Verulamians in the dying minute of the match prevented the scoreline being more respectable.
A much changed starting line-up to the one that took to the field last season, it was always going to take time for the players to gel on the pitch. With some game time under their belts and the return of some key players, Datchworth look to build on the positives and go to Welwyn next week seeking to get a win on the board.
