The game started with Datchworth making a handling error on their own try line, leading to a medics 5m scrum. However some gutsy defence meant that the green and blues were able to soak up the pressure and kick long. After a turnover, some strong carrying by the forwards meant Sam Brunton was able to capitalise on good field position just outside the medics 22 and knock over a drop goal for Datchworth to take a 0-3 lead.
Datchworth started to build phases until another handling error meant the Medics back 3 were able to break away for their first try. The subsequent conversion took the score to 7-3. Datchworth started to assert some dominance in the pack however they were being let down by handling errors and poor decisions at the breakdown. Despite the errors, Datchworth eventually got themselves into the medics 22. A strong run from captain Matt Francis, breaking through the medics defence, meant he only had the full back to beat to score under the posts. The conversion took the score to 7-10. After the restart Datchworth, after making more unnecessary errors, were under pressure again and couldn't hold out the medics, who scored and converted taking the score to 14-10.
It seemed the medics were starting to find some early season form as more pressure lead to another try in the corner. The score now 19-10 meant that Datchworth had to react positively to not let the game slip away. Some strong running by the forwards and centre Henry Mountain meant Datchworth were able to win a penalty in front of the post’s which was duly knocked over taking the score to 19-13 at half-time.
Chasing the game after the restart Datchworth had to make sure they didn't let the Medics score first and run away with the game. A line-out won just outside the medics 22 meant Datchworth were able to build play until Jordan Brewer was able to crash through. The conversion meant the score was now 19-20 in Datchworth’s favour.
Despite the positive restart, Datchworth were once again making unnecessary errors and a wayward kick to the Medic’s back 3 meant another breakaway try took the score to 24-20. After some swift work by captain Francis under the post's, a deadly Datchworth Attack and a wide pass to winger James Watt meant he was able to outpace the medics full back to score in the corner, Datchworth back in the lead 24-25.
With the game on a knife-edge Datchworth knew if they kept possession their dominance in the forwards would make it hard for the medics to get back in the game. A mistake by the medics meant Datchworth secured a 5m scrum in the oppositions half. A heroic effort by The Datchworth front row meant a secure scrum gave number 8 Francis the opportunity to pick from the base and pop to Sean Nicholson, who in turn passed the ball to Tom wood to crash through the medics defence and score under the posts, 24-32. Datchworth held out for the rest of the game to win the first game of the season.
All in all a positive start for Datchworth, who are travelling back into London next week to play Twickenham RFC.
