A blistering opening quarter set the platform for Datchworth’s most complete performance of the season so far.

The men in green showed resolute defence from the starting whistle, resulting in early penalties, and a well worked catch and drive score for Matthew Francis that remained unconverted.

Datchworth continued their assault with hard running from centre Henry Mountain attracting Cheshunt defenders, and allowing James Watt an opportunity to score out wide, only to be prevented by an illegal tackle.

The resultant penalty try was converted by Tom Wood. More pressure from the kick off saw James Watt pick an outstanding support line to capitalise on a Matthew Francis break and run another score in, again converted by Wood.

Datchworth found themselves 19-0 up within 15 minutes, but an abrasive and committed Cheshunt side finally managed to win some possession and put pressure on the Datchworth line. Stout defence kept the home side at bay and Datchworth managed to turn possession over. However a poor kick chase gave the Cheshunt back three time and space to score from an excellent counter attack. Cheshunt could not convert and minutes later Tom Wood slotted a penalty awarded for a high tackle to make the score 22-5.

Paul Broadwood caught the resultant kick off and eluded the oncoming defenders to spark a brilliant series of forward interplay that carried Datchworth up to the Cheshunt 22. Quick ruck ball and a perfectly timed short pass from Wood put Matt francis through a hole in the Cheshunt midfield and he raced to the line to make the halftime score 29-5.

The second half proved to be a tighter affair, with Datchworth unable to capitalise on sustained pressure until Lewis Tyler found himself in space just inside the Cheshunt 22, beating two men with good footwork to score in the corner.

Cheshunt’s frustration began to show, with repeated ill discipline culminating in a red card for one of their back row players for violent conduct. Datchworth continued to pressure the Cheshunt defence but could only manage a penalty, converted by Tom Wood. Cheshunt continued to press whenever they had ball in hand but could not find any gaps in the Datchworth defence, leaving the final score 37-5.

Datchworth can take many positives from a performance that was outstanding in patches, but as always must continue to work in order to ensure more positive results in the coming weeks.
