Stevenage RFC 0 – 51 Datchworth RFC

Having lost their opening game of the season by just a point, Datchworth were keen to make amends at local rivals Stevenage and that they did just that in an entirely one sided derby match.

It didn’t take long for them to open the scoring, fly-half Thomas Wood slotting a penalty after some foul play at the breakdown from the home side. Full-back Joe Richardson then opened the try scoring after fly-hacking through a dropped ball in the Stevenage midfield and finishing under the posts. 2012-2013 Top try scorer James Watt then crossed for a quick fire double to open his account and after Wood had duly converted all three tries, he followed with a penalty to give Datchworth a 27-0 half time lead.

Datchworth’s superiority continued into the second half, lead by a dominant forward pack and highly capable front-row they were demolishing the opposition scrum. Winning another penalty from the scrum, Tom Wood produced a splendid cross field kick for wing Matt Winters to catch and bundle over. No. 8 and Captain Matt Francis then followed up – the Datchworth scrum heaving Stevenage’s scrum over their own line and he finished off adeptly. James Watt then secured his hat-trick with a mazy run before try of the match from flanker Marcus Potter. After consistent phase play from Datchworth’s forwards and backs alike, Sam McBroom took the ball on, was tackled shortly before the line though produced a sublime offload for Potter to finish the thrashing, final score 51-0.

Next week will see a much sterner test as Datchworth host unbeaten Fullerians, 3pm kick off.
