Grasshoppers spring to victory in high scoring affair

In perfect rugby conditions, Datchworth started slowly against an impressive Grasshoppers outfit. Ten minutes into the game and Datchworth were already 17-3 down, two break-away tries against the run of play (both converted) and a penalty apiece (Fly-Half Sam Brunton with the points) meant that the men in green were going to be fighting an uphill battle all afternoon.

Datchworth’s lineout was superior all game and it was from this that they took momentum for their first try. After winning a succession of penalties (the hosts being particularly loose at the break down), Brunton kicked for touch, finding the corner perfectly. James South then setup a driving maul in which Flanker Tom Moss got over the line to get Datch’s first try of the match (36 minutes), leaving the half time score 17-8.
The first score after half time was always going to be fundamental to the outcome of the game and that it was. Datchworth had a penalty, though didn’t find touch and Grasshopper’s beast of a winger ran it straight back into the corner and this was duly converted (54). Datchworth soon hit back though, strong phase play led to extensive pressure and Wing Craig Rowlinson got over the whitewash with an impressive finish for Datch (62), Brunton adding the extras. Just as they were getting back into the game though Grasshoppers got their bonus point try (65). A stop in play saw the visitors losing their concentration – Grasshoppers took full advantage. Their centre carving a beautiful line through the Green’s defence, the try was converted (66). Grasshoppers fly-half then scored a penalty – having an impeccable day with the boot (7 from 7) to put Datchworth out of sight. A late penalty try (80) was not enough for Datchworth who will come away from the game disappointed to get anything at all.
Next week see’s Datchworth take a break from the league as they travel to Wisbech in the national cup.
