6 tries and 3 conversions saw Datchworth come away with a 5 point victory against lowly Old Streetonians on Saturday. From the off it was obvious that Datchworth meant business and although there was some early pressure from the visitors, it only took 10 minutes for the hosts to open their account. Captain Matt Francis, who had a storming 80 minute performance on return from injury, split open Streetonian’s defence and ran in under the post, fly half Tom Wood duly converted. This was quickly followed up by wing James Watt, a darting run saw him beat four of the opposition before scoring in the corner (18 mins), 12-0.
Streetonians weren’t going down without a fight though and soon hit back. Resolute defending from Datchworth was not enough and their Winger managed to get their solitary try in the corner (25 mins). Datchworth still had time to squeeze in one more try before half time though, a strong run from Mark Holgate (all be it in horrendous, personalised white boots) broke through the opposition defence and bundle over the try line (37 mins), this was converted by Tom Wood, half time score 19-5.
Datchworth scored three further tries in the second half, a marvellous line from centre Stuart Young was the first (50 minutes), followed off by a great team try by Michael Skinner (61 minutes) and finished by try machine James Watt (69 minutes). Wood converted one of the three to leave the final score 36-5. A well earnt, positive bonus point win for the men in green.
Next week see’s Datchworth go to arch-rivals Hitchin in what is always a tasty affair. Kick off is at 2.30.
