Datchworth start well though fade away

On a sunny afternoon in West London, Datchworth were looking to avenge a one point defeat to Wasps earlier in the season and this was obvious from the first kick. It took about 10 minutes for Datchworth to score, a continual barrage of pressure led to Wasps full-back knocking on, Datchworth wing James watt hacked through and managed to score under the posts, scum half Tom Wood added the extras. Datchworth continued to apply pressure to the hosts and were first to everything and soon slotted two more well taken penalties (Wood again). Soon after, the Wasps openside flanker was sent to the bin for foul play at the tackle area.

Oddly enough, the sin-binning seemed to galvanise the hosts and they stepped it up a couple of gears. They held out for the duration of the sin-bin and then started to apply pressure to Datchworth, kicking regularly and testing the back three, as well the forwards constantly hitting the fringes. They soon gained a penalty in front of the posts and successfully converted it. Five minutes before half time, Wasps scored their first try of the match. A strong and well thought out backs move saw Wasps’ inside centre to cut through the line and touch down, the extras were added giving Datchworth a narrow half time lead.

It was only Wasps that managed to score in the second half – two well taken tries and both converted. The first saw Datchworth kick from their own line into the hands of Wasps’ absolutely rapid winger, who ran around three of the Datchworth team and finish under the posts. This followed by another backs break and score. Although Datchworth much improved at the set-piece, it wasn’t to be and Wasps ran out worthy winners. Datchworth now have a two week break before visiting local rivals Welwyn on the 22nd March.
