Datchworth 26 - 46 OG's

To finish off a long and exhausting weekend of rugby, and marking the 50th Anniversary of Datchworth RFC, all the Youth teams had a fixture on Sunday afternoon against Old Grammarians, Datchworth's first opponents back in 1969.

OG's brought their full squad, which must have made the dressing room a bit of a squash and a squeeze, and kept to a very simple game plan. They tackle low and well, and move the ball through the hands at speed.

Datchworth more than matched OGs in the scrum, but ferocious OG tackling meant that we did not get the dominant front foot ball that our backs could work off. OGs would move the ball away from the contact area as soon as they could, and their well drilled backs were able to make headway.. It is a testament to the effort that our backs put in, that most of the OGs tries were scored out wide, which resulted in only 3 of their 8 tries being converted.

As the OGs coach said after the game, he does not know of any other team that would keep going and put the effort in for the whole 60 mins of the match, no matter what the opposition throw at them. A great tribute to the effort the boys put in today.

The boys but in a valiant effort today, and the fact that OGs had to keep rotating their players to keep their noses in front says a lot.

Man of the Match was Alex, for a sterling effort out on the wing.

Dick of the day was Joe, for acting like a footballer.

Can I just end by saying a huge thankyou to all at the club who put a great effort in to making this celebration of the Club's 50th Anniversary such a great weekend. Especially all those who worked behind the bar and in the kitchen and on the BBQ and Hog Roast. The weekend was fantastic fun, and hugely enjoyable, and showed Datchworth for the friendly, welcoming and great club it is. Thanks to all those who helped over the weekend.
